William S. Szablak

ILION – William S. Szablak, age 89, of Spinnerville Gulf Road, passed away at the Wynn Hospital, on Sunday evening, March 17, 2024, with his loving family, by his side.

He was born on February 21, 1935, in Utica, New York, the son of the late William and Mary (Yatsky) Szablak. Bill attended Utica schools. He was a Veteran of our country, serving from 1957 until 1959, in the U.S. Army. He was of the Catholic faith. He was employed in the Maintenance Department, of the Ilion Housing Authority. He loved lottery tickets, especially ‘Take-5,’ the Turning Stone, Vernon Downs and playing scratch off’s, always to keep his brain working! He was an avid wood worker.

Surviving family members include his 45-year partner on life’s journey, Sunya; his children, Brenda Stillwell, Linda Keator (John), Ted Szablak and Janet Brown (James). Also surviving are grandchildren, Jessica Stillwell, Andrea Stillwell, Melissa Stillwell, Brianna Stillwell, Justin Keator, Caitlin Keator and Robert Brown (and family); as well as great-grandchildren, Dakoda Wilcox, Derrick Humphreyville and Cora Dolan. His surviving siblings are Shirley Johnson, Mary Johnson and Michael Johnson.

He was predeceased by his mother, Mary Szablak-Johnson; His father, William; his brother, John Szablak; his sisters, Pauline Diaz, Margaret Kowalski and Marie Streusard; his stepdaughter, who graced his life with her love and presence, Mary Timperlake; and former wife, Mildred Szablak.

William’s Calling Hours and Funeral Service will be held Monday, March 25, 2024. The calling hours will be held from 12 noon until 1:30 p.m., with Services to begin at 1:30 p.m., all to be held at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, at 4309 Acme Road, (old Main St.), between Ilion and Frankfort NY 13357 (315-895-7722). Interment will be held on the same day at Armory Hill Cemetery, Ilion.

His family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to the ICU personnel of 3 West, at Wynn Hospital, for their attentive care.

Memorial contributions for William may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 42040, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73123.

Arrangements were carefully thought through and established with their Family Funeral Director and friend, Don Applegate, at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home.
