William "Bill" Coffin

April 1, 1941 — October 29, 2024

ILION – Mr. William J. “Bill” Coffin, age 83, a longtime resident of Ilion, passed away on Tuesday evening, October 29, 2024, after a brief illness. His passing occurred at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse with his loving family by his side.

Born in Little Falls on April 1, 1941, William was the son of the late Norman and Edna (Willman) Coffin. He was raised and educated in Little Falls and was a graduate of St. Mary’s Academy.

On November 25, 1961, Bill was married to the former Kathleen A. Mackin and together they have shared in a blessed and devoted union of over sixty-two years.

In his early years, Bill worked for the former Mohawk Airlines. He obtained a position as a lineman for Ilion Power & Light Commission, dedicating over thirty-one years to the village, retiring in 1994 as a Line Foreman. In his subsequent “retirement” years, Bill kept busy and drove for Central Coach and Birnie Bus.

In his free time, Bill enjoyed time spent with his wife, children and their growing families. Throughout the years, the family would enjoy camping throughout upstate New York, particularly at Moffitt’s Beach and Brantingham Lake. In later years, Bill and Kathy enjoyed traveling to South Florida, spending their time in Miami, Islamorada and Key West. In the summer, they favored the St. Lawrence River.

Bill was a simple man who enjoyed spending time with his family and those he loved. He was quiet, down to earth and anyone who knew him would remember him for his particularly subtle and dry sense of humor. He was known for his one-liners and wouldn’t hesitate to break chops. The world is truly a lot less bright and a lot less funny today…

Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy; his four children, Bill and Bonnie Coffin of Ilion, Mary and Greg Day of Clayton, NY, Mike Coffin and Thomas Dougherty of Miami, FL, and Karen and Chet Slowik of Ilion; his nine grandchildren, Lindsay Coffin of Ilion, Abigail Coffin and Bob Walters of Green Castle, IN, Andrew Coffin and Sierra Leitten of Buffalo, Ryan and Valerie Day of Ilion, Matthew Day and Danielle Grescheck of Ilion, Adam Day of Ilion, Daniel Welch of Miami, Haylee Welch and Josh Pugh of Bridgewater and Austin Welch and Shayla Donnelly of Richfield Springs; and his ten great-grandchildren, Kristopher, Isla, Alexandra, Brayton, Ross, Luca, Leah, Lexi, Jennifer and Aleylah, with number eleven on the way!

He also leaves his in-laws, Gail and Jon Trossett and David and Maryann Mackin, all of Ilion; special friends, Karen and Tom McGrail; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and extended family.

Aside from his parents, Bill was predeceased by his siblings, Norman and Jackie Coffin, Pat and Gene Shepardson and Beverly and Richard Weiss; and by his brother-in-law, Michael Mackin.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend a funeral service and Celebration of Life for Bill on Friday morning, November 8, 2024, at 10:30AM at the Enea & Ciaccia Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, Town of Frankfort, Ilion, NY (315) 894-8000.
