Ilion-Utica - Walter D. Martin, age 65, of Oriskany St. West, Utica, formerly of Ilion and Saranac Lake, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 25, 2015, at home.
He was born on November 17, 1949, in Lake Placid, the son of Stephen and Catherine (Boula) Martin, and graduated from Ilion Central High School. Walter was a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, serving in the US Army, and receiving a Purple Heart Award and several other awards and ribbons of honor. On April 4, 1997, he was married to Nellie (Spencer) Hunt in Saranac Lake, NY. Walter was employed in mortuary services in the US Army for twenty-six years. He was service officer at the American Legion Post 38 of Herkimer and a member of the VFW of Saranac Lake.
Surviving family members include his wife, Nellie; his daughters, Stephanie Martin Cardidakis, of Everett, WA, Hope Thomes and her husband, Bill, of Ilion, and Rebecca Hunt, of Ilion; his grandchildren, Savannah, Erika, Robyn, Robert, Jordan, Frank, Jr., and Isabella; his great-grandson, Delano; two sisters, Kathleen Lee and Mike Jackman, of Herkimer, and Joyce Dennison, of RI; several nieces, including a special niece, Roberta Spencer; and several nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Carol Ashley.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 2, 2015, at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home's larger facility, located at 4309 Acme Rd., Ilion (old Main St. between Ilion and Frankfort).
Calling hours are Wednesday, September 2, 2015, from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m. prior to the funeral home service at 4309 Acme Rd., Ilion (old Main St. between Ilion and Frankfort).
