Shirley M. Naugle, 80, of 389 Otsego Street, Ilion, passed away unexpectedly, Wednesday November 28, 2012, in Upstate University Hospital, Syracuse, as a result of her injuries sustained from a house fire at her residence early Wednesday morning.

She was born on August 28, 1932, in North Columbia, the daughter of the late Elden and Urilla Sitts Brown. Shirley was a graduate of Mohawk High School. On July 7, 1951, she married Richard "Dick" Naugle in North Columbia United Methodist Church. Mr. and Mrs. Naugle have been lifelong residents of the area.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a cashier at the former Loblaw's, Ilion and then Great American, Little Falls. Earlier in her life, Shirley was a bookkeeper at the former Onieda National Bank, Ilion.

Shirley was a member of the North Columbia United Methodist Church, Ilion American Legion Auxiliary, Daughters of the American Revolution, Herkimer County Historical Society and General Herkimer Home. She was a kind hearted animal lover and had a great appreciation for the environment.

She is survived by her loving husband of sixty one years, Richard "Dick" Naugle; her son, Garreth "Gary" Naugle of Herkimer; her daughter, Kimberly Washburn of Ilion; her sister, Nancy Ellen Chrisman of Buffalo; her grandchildren, Garreth Naugle II, Janice Naugle, Colleen Naugle, Pamela Naugle, Stephanie Washburn, Steven Washburn, Shannon Washburn and Shari Washburn; eighteen great grandchildren, a niece, a great niece and several cousins.

Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, Ilion, Town of Frankfort, from 2-5p.m.on Sunday, December 2, 2012. .

Shirley's funeral service will commence at 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 3, 2012 from the chapel of the funeral home, with Pastor Hans Drews, officiating. Interment will be made in Cedarville Cemetery, Cedarville, NY. Contributions, in Shirley's memory, may be offered to the Shirley M. Naugle Memorial Fund or the Herkimer County Humane Society. .
