Shirley Ann Federico, age 93, of New Smyrna Beach, Florida and formerly of Mohawk, New York, passed away peacefully on September 8, 2026 with loving family at her side.
Born September 2, 1933, in Yorkville, New York, Shirley was the daughter of the late Frank and Florence (Waterman) Bowen. She was raised and educated in Yorkville, New York.
Shirley formally worked at General Electric in Utica, New York, where she met the love of her life, Paul Federico. They married a short time later on October 3, 1953 in St. Joseph’s church, Little Falls. A couple of years later, Shirley left General Electric to raise a family with Paul. She always said that her biggest accomplishment and pride in her life was raising her two daughters, Bonnie and Elizabeth, and taking care of Paul. She was a devoted, caring, and loving wife and mother.
Shirley and Paul celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary just a couple of months prior to Paul’s death in 2023. They spent their lives together holding hands wherever they went and on the couch as they watched their favorite shows. They were holding hands at the very end of Paul’s life. They were a true inspiration and role models to all who knew them.
Shirley is survived by her beloved daughters, Bonnie (Lynne “Susie” Leonard) Federico and Elizabeth (John) Sokerka; her grandchildren, Paul (Katie) Sokerka, David (Andrea) Sokerka, and Nicholas (Kara) Leonard; and her two great-grandchildren, Greyson and Elin Leonard. She leaves a sister, Marilyn Thrasher, a brother, Richard Bowen, a brother-in-law, Tony (Millie) Federico and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Aside from her parents, Shirley is predeceased by her husband of 70 years, Paul Federico, her sisters, Patricia Zyskowski and Doris Bowen and brothers, Donald Bowen and Edwin Bowen.
Her family would like to thank Unity Hospital Hospice and the 4th floor Palliative Care Unit staff for their wonderful, kind, and compassionate care during Shirley’s final days.
Shirley’s family and friends will gather in a private ceremony to say their farewells to her. Her earthly remains will be laid to rest in a graveside service at St. Mary’s Cemetery in East Herkimer.
Final Arrangements have been entrusted to the Enea Family Funeral Directors, 24 W. Monroe Street, Little Falls, NY 13365. 315-823-2424.
In remembrance of Shirley Federico, those who wish may make contributions to St. Jude’s Hospital or Boys Town.
