Mrs. Sarah Ann (McLean) Bird a longtime valley resident passed away on Thursday morning, July 17, 2003 in Little Falls Hospital. At the time of her passing, Sarah was comforted with her loving family at her bedside. Mrs. Bird was born on November 6, 1916 in Philadelphia, PA., the daughter of the late James H. and Mary Elizabeth (Wakeman) McLean and received her education in Little Falls, Herkimer and Camden, NJ schools. She was joined in marriage with Walter D. Bird on June 1, 1938 in Ilion. Mr. Bird predeceased her on December 2, 2000. She enjoyed gardening, singing dancing and conversation as well as being an activist. Sarah was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in East Herkimer. She leaves two sons, James Bird and wife Patricia of Pahrump, NV., and Roger Bird and wife Kathy of Minoa, NY, three daughters, Joyce Thurston and husband David of Deerfield, Sallie Thomas and husband William of Las Vegas, NV., and Marilyn Spriggs and husband David of Syracuse, twelve cherished grandchildren and twelve adored great grandchildren. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor MacGregor and a brother James W. McLean. Sarah's funeral will commence at 12 o'clock p.m., from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, East Herkimer, on Saturday, July 19, 2003. The family will receive relatives and friends from 11-12, prior to the service. Procession will follow to Oak Hill Cemetery, Herkimer where Sarah will be laid to rest. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care, Inc., envelopes are available at the Holleran-Enea Funeral Home.
