On Tuesday morning, April 29, 2003 a special angel took Robert A. Hurley to be with his predeceased loved ones peacefully in his home. He was currently residing at 5139 Bear Rd., North Syracuse, and was a former longtime Herkimer resident. Mr. Hurley was born on December 8, 1927 in Utica, a son of the late Charles and Nellie (Thorn) Hurley. He received his education in Utica schools. On February 11, 1956, he was united in marriage with the former Joanne Salerno. The couple enjoyed a blessed and devoted union of 47 years. Robert served our country in the Korean War with the United States Marine Corps. He enlisted on April 16, 1952 and was honorably discharged on April 15, 1960; nearly eight years of dedicated service to our country. He was last employed with the village of Herkimer for 30 years. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in New York Mills. Robert was a loving and devoted father and husband. He was an avid fisherman and loved animals especially Doberman pinchers. He leaves his beloved wife, Joanne, a son, Joseph (Chipper) Hurley, a special companion, "Master Jammer III", a special niece, Annette Deyle and husband James and their daughter Andrea all of Ilion, a special nephew, Jimmy Karczewski of California, several nieces and nephews, in laws, Catherine Makohen of Ilion and John and Helen Salerno of Utica, a step sister, Rosella Hurley of New Hartford, many special friends including Wally and Louise Walawander and Matthew Bielaska, Mandy and Chipper Viscomi. A sister, Helen DePerna preceded him in death and he was also predeceased by a canine companion Master Jammer, II. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, May 2, 2003 from 5-8 p.m at the Enea Family Funeral Home, Main Street between Frankfort and Ilion (894-8000). Mr. Hurley's funeral will commence at 8 am on Saturday morning, April 3, from the chapel of the Enea Family Funeral Home, Frankfort/Ilion where prayer will be offered and at 9 am from St. Mary's Church, New York Mills with the Rev. Valentine Krul, pastor officiating. Procession will follow to St. Stanislaus Casimir Cemetery where Mr. Hurley will be laid to rest and full military rites will be accorded by the United States Marine Corps.
