ILION - Richard John Newton II, 66, of Ilion, New York, played his last game of pool and stood up for the first time in over 30 years after hearing the summons of the universe calling him home on February 6, 2024. He was born on July 31, 1957, in Rome, New York, the youngest of four. Richard, known by all as Rick, will be remembered for his love for his family, his passion for tinkering in his garage, his enjoyment of loud classic rock, playing pool, his warm and sociable nature and refusing to let his limitations stop him from living his best life.
Rick is survived by his five beloved daughters: Amanda Jene, Bethany Jill, Melissa Jae, Jessica June Lois and Roxsan Janel. He was a cherished grandfather to many grandchildren. Rick also leaves behind his two sisters; a bunch of nieces and nephews; and his close group of friends, The Garage Crew, with whom he spent many memorable moments.
Rick was predeceased by his father, Richard John Newton; his mother, Betty June (O'Brien) Bailey; his grandson, Nicholas; his sister, Cindy; his niece, Melinda; as well as his nephew, Todd, whom he held dear.
As a child, Rick had traveled the world visiting 48 States and living in Japan for 3 years before settling in the Central New York area, choosing to raise his family in the Mohawk Valley, that he called home. Rick graduated from West Canada Valley High School in 1976. He was known for his dedication to his studies and his commitment to learning and for being that long haired rebel barred from graduation because he refused to cut his hair.
As an adult, his sharp and creative mind led him down the path of electromechanical engineering, foregoing college and learning the trade through experience. In his later years, he used those skills to customize his environment to suit his needs, believing that nothing was impossible. He was passionate about sharing his knowledge with others, especially his daughters and grandchildren.
