Mr. Richard Morgan Metz, 81, of 97 South Main Street, Dolgeville, died unexpectedly Thursday, January 1, 2004, at his residence, after a brief illness. Dick was born in the town of Salisbury on August 5, 1922, the son of the late Harold E. and Cora (Yates) Metz and was educated in local schools. A veteran of World War II, he served honorably in the Army from October 1942 until he was discharged in November 1945. He served in Company E, 133rd Infantry, serving in the European Theater, Sicily, Rome-Arno, Naples-Foggi and the North Apennines. Upon returning home, Dick was first employed by the Adirondack Bat Company of Dolgeville. He left there in 1963 and went to the Remington Arms Company of Ilion, retiring in 1982 with 19 years of service. Dick was married to the former Helen Mae Augar on May 28, 1971, in the United Methodist Church in Dolgeville. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Glenn H. Poppleton, then pastor. Dick was of the Presbyterian faith, and a member of the Dolgeville Rod & Gun Club, and personally enjoyed bowling and fishing. In addition, he was a social member of the Hilltop Fire Department. He is survived by his wife, Helen; his daughters, Betty and her husband, Larry Fazio, of Dolgeville, and Shirley and her husband, Steven McClinnus, of Tampa, Fla.; his sisters, Margaret Ottman of Dolgeville and Lillian Sliter of Old Forge; his grandchildren, Larry J. and his wife, Krisztina Fazio, Sean, Lorie, Jennifer, Jason and his wife, Courtney, Rosemary, Sheila and Richard; several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Rosemary Cool, on February 15, 1992. Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family in the Salisbury Rural Cemetery in the spring. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are entrusted to the Roberts-Buck Funeral Home, 3 Faville Ave., Dolgeville.
