RICHFIELD SPRINGS-COLUMBIA – Richard T. Herron, Sr., age 71, of Hayner Rd., Town of Columbia, Richfield Springs, passed away unexpectedly, on Sunday, April 2, 2023. On this very special day as well as so many days of our lives, Richard was surrounded by those who were so dear to him and that he loved so much.
He was born on June 13, 1951, the son of the late Frederick James and Genevieve Alice (Walts) Herron and graduated from Owen D. Young Central School. On June 19, 1971, he was married to Sandra M. Backus, at St. James Church, Ft. Plain. This loving union lasted 42 years and Sandy passed away May 13, 2013. For over 34 years “Red” was a machinist at Remington Arms, having been honored for his dedicated service. A lifelong area resident, Richard just loved to be outside and his beautiful home provided him plenty of opportunity to do this. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and spent so much time camping and just loved a good beer and bourbon. He made a heck of a dandelion wine and cherished the time having all the boys together during hunting season, enjoying the wine. One of our fondest memories is how happy Richard would be spending time with his son Rich and especially enjoying the sawmill he helped put together with him.
Survivors include his beloved family: his son and daughter-in-law, Richard T. Herron, II and Charissa; grandchildren and great- grandchildren, whom he loved to spend time with, Kylah and Lance Black, Richard Herron, III and Hannah Weller, Laina Herron, Bentley Black, Kysandra Black, Emberlynn Herron and Salem Herron; his brothers and sister, Fred (Walda) Herron, Ted (Sandie) Herron, Mary (Mitch) Mika, Steven Herron and David (Brenda) Herron; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents, Genevieve and Frederick; his in-laws, Charles and Reba Backus; and his wife, Sandy
Funeral Services will be held Thursday, April 6, 2023, at 9:15 a.m., at the Enea & Ciaccia Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, Ilion, New York and at 10:00 a.m., at the Blessed Sacrament Church, E. Main St., Mohawk, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, April 5, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Enea & Ciaccia Family Funeral Home. Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours and the Funeral Services the following day.
Funeral arrangements for Richard have been entrusted to Enea, Ciaccia & Applegate Funeral Directors.
