Mr. Peter G. Pakenas, 88, of Herkimer, husband of Helen M. Pakenas, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Thursday evening, June 5, 2003 in Valley Health Services, Herkimer. He was born on February 2, 1915 in Amsterdam a son of the late Joseph and Constance (Svoba) Pakenas. He was a graduate of Amsterdam High School. Peter was joined in marriage with the former Helen M. Brown in Middleville on September 16, 1940. From the happy occasion of their marriage until the day of Peter's passing the couple shared a wonderful union of 64 years. He was last employed with Special Metals as an inspector. For several years, Peter assisted his father and brother in the operation of Pakena's and Sons Dry Cleaning in Amsterdam. He was a communicant of St. Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer. Mr. Pakenas was a very active and committed member of the Village of Herkimer Senior Citizens. He was sincerely dedicated to the well-being of the seniors. More importantly, Peter's family was of the upmost importance to him. His unwavering and steadfast love to his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren was reflected in the conscientious attention he gave to his loved ones and in his many thoughtful giving ways. He had a great love for the outdoors and sports. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, and bowling. He will be remembered as a caring and affectionate family man. Peter leaves his loving wife Helen of Herkimer, a son, William Pakenas and wife Anne of Frederick, Maryland, a daughter, Cindy Fuerst and husband David of Trenton Falls, a brother Anthony Pakenas and wife Mary of TN., a sister Regina Barkevich of TN, four cherished grandchildren, Christopher and Lynn Slocum, Peter M. Pakenas and wife Elizabeth and Paula A. Cardea and husband Robert, four adored great grandchildren, Paige Elizabeth Pakenas who was just born, William "Will" Phillip Pakenas, Colton James Cardea and Dylan Cash Cardea, many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by a brother in law, Henry Brown. He was predeceased by two sisters, Adeline Slaveikis and Frances Raila, a brother in law, Tony Raila, a brother Joseph Pakenas and a sister in law, Dot Pakenas. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Holleran-Enea Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington St., Herkimer on Sunday, June 8, 2003 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Peter's funeral will commence at 9:30 am on Monday, June 9, from the chapel of the funeral home thence to St. Francis de Sales Church, Bellinger St., Herkimer where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am by the Rev. Mark Cunningham, pastor. Procession will follow to Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer where Peter will be laid to rest. Kindly consider contributions in his honor to a charity of ones choice, envelopes are available funeral home. The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Valley Health Services, Herkimer whose assistance and professionalism provided such meaningful support and comfort to Peter and his family. The Village of Herkimer Senior Citzens will gather at the funeral home at 3 p.m. to conduct their service.
