Melissa A. Burns

Melissa A. Burns, 51, of Mohawk New York, passed away peacefully at home with the comfort of her family and friends by her side on August 8th, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born on December 15th,1974 in Ilion, New York. On July 3rd,1999, Melissa was united in marriage to Jon J. Burns at the First Presbyterian Church in Ilion, they have since shared their years devoted in love, companionship, and making many cherished memories before her passing.

Melissa was a loving wife and devoted mother who found her greatest joys in her family and friends. She found her happiness in so many of life’s simple and meaningful moments. She was always there for her children- never wanting to miss a game, milestone, or special moment. Being present for her kids was one of the prideful parts of her life. She supported them whole-heartedly and took great joy in watching them grow and pursue their dreams.

Melissa loved the beach, where she could relax and feel at peace. She had a special place in her heart for her beloved animals. She took great pride in her work and the relationships she built along the way. She loved traveling and making memories on trips with those she cared about. Above all, she will be remembered for the love she gave so freely, the lives she touched, and the many beautiful memories she leaves behind.

She is survived by her loving spouse Jon J. Burns, two daughters Taylor (Luke) and Brooke. Parents; Hazel and Ray Stillwell, Ron and Janet Van Valkenburgh, Paula Burns, Jerry Burns. Siblings; Michele, Carla, Kenni Lee, Dirk, Sheri, Beth, Todd, Tracy. Nieces and nephews; Kaytlyn, David Jay, Harper, Nick, Cooper, Wyatt, Cody, Noel, Kyle, Kendra, Madelyn, Wesley, Todd, Jake, Grace. A special thank you to her friends that have been there throughout this journey.

The family is deeply grateful to the medical staff for their exceptional care, kindness, and compassion. Especially the staff at Memorial Sloan Kettering.

Funeral services honoring Melissa Burns will be held on Saturday, August 15th, 2026, at The Enea & Ciaccia Family Funeral Home, located at 4309 Acme Road, Ilion; calling hours are from 11AM until 2PM at which time a service will begin. Followed by a celebration of life at the Mohawk American Legion, 43 West Main Street in Mohawk.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Melissa’s memory may donate to The American Cancer Society remembering her.
