Maurice "Maury" McGavin, 68, of 5421 State Route 167, Little Falls, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at 8:30 a.m. at his home after a period of failing health. He was born Sept. 4, 1935, in Chicago, Ill., the son of the late Charles and Agnes (Burns) McGavin. He was educated in Youngstown, Ohio, schools. After completion of his education, Maury served with the United States Marine Corps Reserve for eight years. In 1976, he was united in marriage to the former Carol Nolan in Burlington, Vt. Maury had been a resident of Little Falls since 1978 and was a member of the Holy Family Parish. He was employed by JC Penney, where he worked for 38 years. The couple moved to Little Falls when Maury transferred here as store manager for the former JC Penney. Maury held this position with JC Penney from 1978 until the store closing in 1995. He remained very active throughout the community by becoming involved in the Little Falls Rotary, where he once served as past president and past secretary; he was also the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award. He also became a member of the Little Falls Elks Lodge 42, where he served as past exalted ruler and past esquire. His dedication and hard work in the Elks Lodge also earned him Elk of the Year. Surviving are his wife, Carol and his daughter, Jennifer, both of Little Falls. He is also survived by children from a previous marriage, Lawrence McGavin and wife Karen of Boardman, Ohio; Kathleen McGavin and husband Michael Zorella of Cleveland, Ohio; Maureen McGavin and husband Gary Morgan of Columbus, Ohio; along with two grandchildren, Michael McGavin and Christopher Zorella; many nieces, nephews and cousins, including his special niece, Sandy Gernhardt. He was preceded in death by his brother, Raymond McGavin and three sisters, Irene Wright, Rita Wilhoit and Ruth Thompson and his son, James Daniel McGavin. The funeral will commence Friday, Feb. 13, at 10:15 a.m. from the Enea Funeral Home, 24 W. Monroe St., Little Falls, and at 11 a.m. from the Holy Family Parish Church, corner of East Main and John streets, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Tho mas Vail. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family. Friends and family are invited to calling hours which will be held Thursday, Feb. 12, from 5-8 p.m. at the Enea Funeral home. Members of the Little Falls Elks Lodge are asked to meet at the funeral home on Thursday evening at 6:30. It is the wish of the family that memorial contributions in memory of Maury be made to a charity of one's choice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
