Matthew W. Damon

June 6, 1984 — April 3, 2024

PUTNAM COUNTY – Mr. Matthew W. Damon, age 39, passed away unexpectedly, on April 3, 2024, at his residence, in the Town of Greenport, New York, Columbia County, thence being transferred to Ellis Hospital, Schenectady.

He was born on June 6, 1984, in Carmel, New York, a son of Gerald M. Damon and Lila L. (Smith) Blazek. Matt graduated and received his diploma from Westchester Exceptional Children’s School. He, at one time, was employed with Price Chopper.

Matt fulfilled many dreams and mostly he loved to go fishing, especially deep-sea with his dad and cousin Michael Ruggiero, Jr., of Katonah, New York. Our family was not prepared for Matt’s death. This uncertainty is overwhelming. We loved him just the way he was and his absence from our lives will be most difficult to bear. He had made so much progress through the years that we were all so very proud of. We did our best to ensure that his life was full beyond his personal limitations and that he could gain as much independence as possible.

Over the years, we have faced many difficult decisions, not only what was best for Matt, but also what was best for the rest of the family and what we were all capable of. It was a struggle to get the support and care that Matt needed. We certainly had wished to keep Matt in his own home, but circumstances made this impossible and Matt lived and died under the care of others. We may look back with regret yet look forward with the hope he is at peace with the angels.

He is survived by his mother, Lila Blazek (Andrew); his father, Gerald Damon (Elizabeth Cross); his sister, Maura (nee Damon) and Phanuel “Phinn” Celestin; his brothers, Ryan Damon (Catlin) and their children, James and Maggie; his brother, Evan Damon; his brother, Christopher Gomes and his wife, Carrie and daughter, Sarah, of Tennessee; his grandparents, Claire and Stuart Lichter; and his aunts, Lorna Damon and Allison Damon (Paul).

He was predeceased by his grandmother, Lena R. Smith; and beloved aunt, Mary Walka.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center Street, in St. Johnsville, New York, with Father Rafal Dadello, officiating. Interment will take place in St. Johnsville Cemetery, in the new section out back.

Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at calling hours at the funeral home, on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and attend the Funeral Services on Wednesday as well. A mercy meal will be held in St. Johnsville following the Funeral Services and will be announced at the graveside.

All Matt’s arrangements have been entrusted to longtime family friends, Enea, Ciaccia & Applegate Funeral Directors (518) 568-2300.
