Mary H. (Childs) Urich, age 76, a lifelong Mohawk resident, passed away peacefully on Friday afternoon, June 9, 2023, at The Pines in Utica, where she has been a resident these past few years.
Mary was born in the family homestead in Mohawk on December 17, 1946, the youngest of eight children to the late William and Evelyn (Mergenthaler) Childs. She was raised and educated in Mohawk, graduating with the Mohawk High School Class of 1965.
On February 7, 1967, Mary was wed to Gary A. Urich at the original Blessed Sacrament Church in Mohawk. Together, Mary and Gary spent over fifty-six years in a close bond; united by love, laughter and family.
In her working years, Mary was employed with Duofold and with the Original Herkimer Cheese Company; a place where she made many memories and many friends, especially Irene Ptaznik.
The first and foremost priority in Mary’s life was always her husband, children and grandchildren. She selflessly gave of herself to others and cared for not only her own children, but also the children of her community, in any way that she could. She had a special place in her heart for many; especially Stephanie, RJ and Spencer.
Throughout the years, she and her husband were social butterflies who enjoyed dancing with friends, family outings and bowling. They went away with the Fire Department once a year, much to the delight of their children, who always made sure to throw a raging bash!
Mary had an amazing sense of humor and was hilarious in her story-telling abilities. She truly had a joke for every situation. She could often be found at Emmett and Hazel’s home, laughing and partying with the folks of Jacksonburg. She was an unforgettable spitfire of a woman with an amazing zest for life and her family will always remember the good times they had with her.
Mary is survived by her beloved husband, Gary A. Urich, Sr.; her daughter and son-in-law, Gretchen and Daniel Bucenec of Whitesboro; her sons and daughters-in-law, Gary A. Urich, Jr. of Daytona Beach, FL, Steven and Liz Urich of Utica and Timothy and Mollie Urich of Rutland, VT; her grandchildren, Tyler Urich, Samantha Urich and Zachary Lamica, Melaina Urich, Zoey Urich, Molly Urich, Sarah Palmer, and soon-to-be born, Finley Urich; and her special great-grandson, Connor. She also leaves her siblings, Ernest Childs of Coventon, GA and Pearl Dunn of Mohawk; her in-laws, Corydon Urich, Barbara Urich, Regina Childs and Mary Ann Childs; along with numerous special nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and extended family.
She was predeceased by her parents; her siblings, Edward Childs, James Childs, Charles Childs, Emmett and Hazel Childs and William Childs; and by a special brother-in-law, Tim Dunn, whom she is now smoking cigs with without having to hide in Ernie’s bushes!
