Margaret Mary Green, age 83, a lifelong Mohawk Valley resident, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 at Albany Medical Center.
Born on September 7, 1941, Margaret was the daughter of the late James and Lillian (Jackson) Green. She tells her life story, in her own words, as follows:
‘At Ellis Island, there were many people who lost their heritage because of the language barrier. So, instead of our family’s true name (Guarino), their entrance papers were stamped “Green” and that is the name they had to go by.
They entered the country with their friends. Some of those family names were Caruso, Seppi and Pileggi. Grandmother’s sister’s name was Francis Caruso, the maternal head of the Caruso family, which makes them all my cousins. All of the families first settled in the State of Connecticut, but shortly found out that other families had settled in Frankfort, New York, so they relocated.
Each family settled on Orchard Street, where I grew up. My father was first cousin to Joseph Pileggi, Sr. When I first went to New Life Church, I met my cousin, Joseph Pileggi, Jr. and enjoyed his friendship until he passed away.
I was born in Mayfield, NY at the home of my maternal grandmother, Carolyn (Wilson) Jackson. There were no hospitals in 1941 so I was born in my Grandmother’s home. She was a midwife. As a child, I spent my summer vacations in Mayfield at the family home; a farm which grew crops and raised chickens.
When I was 16 years old Grandmother Jackson passed away from cancer. I then graduated from Frankfort-Schuyler High School with the Class of 1959. I worked for New York Telephone Company as a long-distance operator from 1959 until 1991. I soon got bored and began working for Utica Neighborhood Housing, Inc. from 1994 – 2001. I now work at New Life Church as secretary to my Pastor. I am a prayer warrior and sit on the Board of Directors as a Deacon.
The Lord has blessed me with a son, Mark Andrew Green; a grandson, Brandon Green; grandchildren, Chad and Ciana; and great-grandchildren, Olivia, Liana and Harper. My constant companion was my cat, Cinnamon, who passed away on December 23, 2023, at the age of 18 years old.
I am now 83 years old and will move on soon to my parents’ family tree. I leave you, Mark, with all of this information when the Lord calls me home. I love you all and hope with all my heart that you all will find Jesus in your life and insure a place in heaven. There is more to life than just this world: there is eternal life. Death is not the end. It is the beginning of a new life with God, the Father and His son, Jesus. Seek it in your life.
Love you all…'
A graveside service honoring and commemorating Margaret’s life will commence on Wednesday morning, October 9, 2024, at 10:00AM at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frankfort, where her earthly remains will be laid to rest in the family plot. All are invited to attend.
