FRANKFORT - Mrs. Mamie A. (Caiola) Scalise, age 73, a lifelong Frankfort resident, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, May 28, 2024, at the Foltsbrook Center in Herkimer. At the time of her passing she had the love and support of her family by her side.
Born on February 7, 1951, Mamie was the daughter of the late Carl and Josephine (Spatto) Caiola. Her early years were spent in Frankfort and she graduated with the Frankfort-Schuyler High School Class of 1969.
On September 11, 1971, Mamie was married to the late Ralph E. Scalise and together they shared in a blessed union of forty years, until Ralph’s untimely passing on October 9, 2011. A piece of Mamie’s heart went with Ralph that day and their children take comfort in knowing that the two are now reunited.
When Mamie’s children were young, she was employed with Annunciation Regional School where she worked in the kitchen. Most of her career, however, was spent in banking where she spent over twenty years at M&T bank in Frankfort, retiring in 2012.
Mamie had an enduring strength that was admirable and as she progressed through her lengthy illnesses, she was known for being a fighter. Her faith was important to her, and she would pray the rosary daily and attend Mass at Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church in Frankfort. She always had the constant support of her family, friends and community and she truly appreciated her dinner outings and daily phone calls with the girls. More recently, she enjoyed socializing at the Frankfort Seniors’ meetings.
Mamie was a facet in her community, and she was known for her honesty, openness, and wonderful sense of humor. She was not afraid to speak her mind and was organized and detail-oriented both in her own home and in others! She was always welcoming and made everyone feel like they were part of her own family. Nothing gave her greater joy than when she could gather her loved ones around the table, whether it be Christmas time or just another Sunday; baking and cooking for the ones she held dear. It was no secret that the ones she loved the most were her grandsons and grand puppies!
Without a doubt the most important thing in Mamie’s life was her family, and she will be dearly missed by those she leaves behind, including her sons, Jamie Scalise and his wife, Kristen, of Breinigsville, PA, Robert Scalise and Jennifer Todaro of Buffalo and Mark Scalise and Lineda Moncoeur of Ilion; her daughter, Marla Getman and husband, Kevin, of Ilion; her grandsons, Jack Getman and Joseph Scalise; and grandpuppies, Georgie, Blitz and Luna.
She also leaves her siblings, Josephine Hayes of Florida, Peter “Butch” Caiola of Herkimer, Francis and Kathy Caiola of Frankfort and Gary and Michele Caiola of Frankfort; her in-laws, Dominick and Elena Scalise of Herkimer, Kathy Lindberg of Clinton, Patricia Tarnacki of Herkimer and Joseph and Peggy Scalise of Herkimer; along with numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and an enduring group of close friends who were all so very important to her.
She was predeceased by her beloved, Ralphie; her parents, Carl and Josephine; her parents-in-law, Ralph and Rose Scalise; her in-laws, David Hayes, Janice Caiola and Anthony Tarnacki; and a special aunt, Ann Desmond.
Mamie’s family wishes to thank the entire 1st floor staff and rehab team at Foltsbrook, for the care and attention shown to Mamie during her time there.
