Mr. Lester A. (Les) Brown Jr., 73, of Mohawk passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.
He was born on December 30, 1952, in Herkimer, New York, son of the late Lester A. Brown Sr. and Betty (Cunningham) Brown. He received his education in the Mohawk Central School system, graduating with the Class of 1971. He then attended Morrisville College.
Les worked as a mechanic and in the automotive industry for over 40 years, although his knowledge and skills extended to family and friends well beyond. Les worked for many shops including Eastern Auto, Oriskany Garage, Midtown and as a Service Manager at Holt Brothers in Mohawk. He retired in 2015.
Les was a proud Former Boy Scout Leader of 40 years with the Leatherstocking Council (formally The General Herkimer). He encouraged and taught young men in both outdoor and life skills. He was a role model for hard work, honor and dedication.
Les enjoyed riding his motorcycle, tinkering with anything that had a motor, attempting to teach his grandchildren how to fix things, dining out on Wednesday night, and was always quick with a good comeback, quip, or his long running catchphrases. He had a special place in his heart for the family camp at Canadarago Lake. He spent many summers of his youth at the Lake and is where he met his former spouse and children’s mother, Linda Abeling (Tubia). He took ownership of the same camp he grew up in and enjoyed many years of fishing, boating, family time, and enjoying peace and relaxation.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter Leslie Ann, his parents Lester Sr. and Betty, brothers; Tom and Gary Brown, and his sister Donna Brown.
Les is survived by his three children; Stacey Greene of Mohawk, Jeremy Brown (Karen) of Mohawk and Theresa Brown of Ilion, 9 grandchildren; Justine Greene, Aaron Brown and his fiancée Stephanie, Bryan Greene, Nathaniel Brown, Abby Brown, Trinity Pope, Joseph Downing, Leah Brown, and Lydia Downing. As well as 4 great-grandchildren; Kimberly, Hunter, Lily and Sienna. Les is also survived by his girlfriend of 12 years, Tammy Shaut. Les was a father figure to Brent, Heather, Bryan and Robert and a loving grandfather figure to C.J. with whom he shared a special bond.
Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours and reflection on Monday, August 24th, 2026, from 4:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m., at the Enea & Ciaccia Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd.
