Mr. John C. Homrighaus 80 of 88 North Helmer Avenue Dolgeville, died Sunday December 5, 2004 at his residence of natural causes. John was born in Dolgeville on July 8, 1924 the son of the late Merle G. and Harriet (Garlick) Homrighaus and was a graduate of Dolgeville High School class of 1942. A veteran of World War II, he joined the United States Army on February 1, 1943 and was honorably discharged with the rank of T/Sgt on October 6, 1945. He served in the Army-Air Corps with the 775th Bomb Squadron in Italy. He flew campaigns in Europe, and the Balkans and earned the following decorations: European-Afican-Middle Eastern Theater ribbon with 3 Bronze Stars, Distinguished Unit Badge, the Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Good Conduct Medal. Upon returning home, John furthered his education by attending Utica College and then transferring to the University of Miami where he graduated from. He then returned to New York state where he received his teachers Certification from Oneonta Teacher College. John's career in education began in 1951 where he taught elementary education in Little Falls Schools until 1965. He then entered the guidance field in education and was employed by the Johnstown school district. He continued there until he took position as Elementary Principal at the Mohawk School district where he retired from. His marriage to the former Thelma Miller took place on November 26, 1948 in Cora Gables, Florida. They recently celebrated 56 years of marriage. Upon his retirement, John served as the coordinator for the Herkimer County DWI Program. His community interest also involved him in the Town of Manheim where he served as an election inspector, and also with Troop 18 BSA as a high adventure leader. He was a member of the Little Falls Post American Legion and a faithful member ot the Dolgeville United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Thelma; his sons and their wives Michael and Cathleen Homrighaus of Cortland, and Barry and his wife Barbara Homrighaus of Klamath Falls, Oregon; two sisters and their husbands Elizabeth and Harvey Hall and Ruth and William Sawyer of Florida; his grandchildren Jason, Zachary, Austin, James and Ruth; his gret grandchildren Joseph and Jennifer; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Friday December 10, 2004 at 2PM at the Dolgeville United Methodist Church on Helmer Avenue. The Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Losey, Pastor will officiate. Burial will be in the Spring in the Dolgeville Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Roberts-Buck Funeral Home, 3 Faville Ave, Dolgeville.
