HERKIMER - Ezio Joseph Vallese, a lifelong resident of Herkimer, passed away peacefully in Huntsville AL with family by his side. Known to most as “Papa”, family was most important to him.
Ezio was born on October 11, 1924, and attended Herkimer Schools. He was a decorated WWI Veteran wounded in Monte Casino. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Bravery, Purple Heart and WWII Victory Medal. Ezio then worked for the US Postal Service, retiring in 1984.
Ezio was a quiet man with a big sense of humor. He had a passion for reading, music, food and learning. But most of all, he was an exceptional and loving Grandfather.
On April 11, 1950, Ezio married the former Maria Gasparretti in Italy. They shared a loving union until her passing on June 30, 1986. Ezio was also predeceased by his parents, Carlo and Rubina Vallese and brothers Etro Vallese and Saverio Vallese.
Surviving Ezio are his two daughters, Donna (Glen) Sietsema of Madison AL and Carla (Frank) Aiello of Naples FL; two grandchildren William (Patrick) DiTullio and Maria (Ryan) Drago; and one great-grandson Luca Ezio Drago.
A funeral Mass will be held at Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church, South Main Street in Herkimer on Thursday May 15, 2025, at 10:00 AM, followed by a burial with full military honors at Calvery Cemetery in Herkimer. In accordance with Ezio’s wishes, there will be no calling hours.
Arrangements are being trusted with the Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 North Washington St, Herkimer NY.
Memorials may be made to The Wounded Warrier Foundation, Tunnel to Towers Foundation or The Salvation Army. Envelopes will be available at the funeral service.
