Mrs. Elinor E. Barnes, age 98, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2023 at the Foltsbrook Center in Herkimer, in the privacy and comfort of her own bed.
Born in Utica on July 17, 1925, Elinor was the daughter of the late Florence Finhout. She was subsequently adopted and brought up in Herkimer by the late George and Ida Root.
On August 17, 1946, Elinor was married to Mr. Alfred Barnes and together they shared in a blessed union of almost thirty years, until Alfred's passing on January 21, 1975.
Elinor retired from many years at the Remington Arms Company where she worked as a keypunch operator. She was a very active member of the Christ Episcopal Church where she sang in the choir and served on many committees throughout the years.
In 2004, Elinor relocated to live with her daughter and son-in-law, first in Pennsylvania where she was active in the Dowingtown Senior Center, and then to Delaware where she enjoyed the Milford Senior Center. She was a simple, kind and caring person who made friends easily and who will be missed by her dear family.
She is survived by her daughters, Linda Graber of New York and Sandra Penny of Delaware; her son, Alan Barnes of New York; her three grandchildren, Rick Clemons of Illinois, Monica Hudak of Pennsylvania and Brittany Meher of New York; along with seven great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and one sister, Lorraine Collar and her family.
In keeping with Elinor's wishes, her earthly remains will be laid to rest with her husband in Mt. View Memorial Gardens in Little Falls, New York, in a private ceremony.
Final arrangements were pre-arranged and entrusted to the Enea, Ciaccia & Applegate Funeral Directors. Online notes of sympathy may be left at
