ST. JOHNSVILLE – Mrs. Edna C. Carter, age 94, of St. Johnsville, NY, passed away peacefully, on Monday morning, December 2, 2024, at the St. Johnsville Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, with her most loving family at her side.
She was born Edna Caroline Waufle on July 26, 1930, in Fort Plain, New York. She was the daughter of the late Albert Waufle and Marion (Keller) Waufle Abel. She grew up in St. Johnsville and graduated from St. Johnsville Central School, ‘Class of 1947.’
In May of 1948 she was married to Richard F. Carter. They shared a blessed union of 33 years until his passing in 1981. At one point she worked for the former Palatine Dying Company. She was a devoted mother and homemaker to four children, one of which was a daughter Ellen Carol Carter (who had Down Syndrome). She cared for her 61 years until her passing in 2022.
Edna had many interests including belonging to the Postmark Commemorative Society, collecting match book covers, coins, and oil lamps. She was also into genealogy, having two large binders with history for the Waufle and Carter families.
Edna leaves many wonderful family members and friends, and is survived by her sons, Richard Carter and companion Sharon Flanders, of St. Johnsville and Roger Carter and his wife Joan, of Herkimer; her sister, Phyllis Jones, of Buel, New York; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Additional surviving families include stepbrothers and sisters, The Waufle’s in Little Falls, New York.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her son James F. Carter and his wife Donna Caponera Carter, her daughter, Ellen Carol Carter, her brothers, Albert, Ivan and his wife Alberta, and Richard, her brothers in law, Kenneth Jones, Sr., and William Carter, a nephew, Kenneth Jones, Jr., sisters in law, Charlotte Carter and Marion (Dolly) Smith, and her son Roger’s first wife Pat Carter. Also, two stepbrothers, Clark Abel and his wife Hilda, and Sherwood Abel and his wife Shirley.
Her Graveside Funeral Service will be held in the Spring of 2025 at St. Johnsville Cemetery, at the family plot, and there will be no calling hours per her wishes.
It is the wish of the family that in lieu of floral offerings a donation be made in Ellen’s memory to the National Down Syndrome Society, 1155 15th Street NW, Suite 540, Washington, DC 20005.
