Doris Nicholson, 90, of Clark Mills and Caroga Lake, passed away on Thursday evening, July 10, 2025, at Utica Nursing and Rehab, following a long illness.
Dori was born in Gloversville on March 1, 1935, the daughter of the late Gordon and Frances (Lorenz) White. She was a graduate of Gloversville High School, Class of 1952, and Utica College, where she obtained a degree in accounting. On August 26, 1961, she married Terrence J. Nicholson in Gloversville. Terry passed on April 24, 2025.
Dori completed taxes for many of her family and friends throughout the years. She was also active in her community, belonging to Central Oneida Co. Volunteer Ambulance Corp, where she served as an EMT, Captain and Treasurer; the Clark Mills Historical Society, where she also served as Treasurer; and the East Caroga Lake Protective Association where she was a member of the Weed Committee. She also enjoyed golfing, belonging to the Yahnundasis Golf Club in Utica.
Dori’s favorite place was her and Terry’s camp on East Caroga Lake. On the lake she could be found boating, waterskiing, taking long walks and sitting by a campfire with family and friends with her favorite brew, Genesee. Sunrise was her favorite time of day, and she never got tired of watching the sunrise from her dock. She also attended weekly “Mystery Dinners” with some camp neighbors and friends, and going to Wemple and Edick’s Ice Cream store with her friend, Gail.
Dori, who was always up for a party, was a key organizer for an annual Christmas in July party. She also helped plan the Moon Bake, which was held in July of 1969, during our landing on the Moon. And who could forget the many clam bakes held with her friends and neighbors at the lake.
She also enjoyed attending SU Football games, especially enjoying the marching bands. Dori was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed and regularly attended her kids’ sporting events. She often yelled the loudest encouraging her kids or following a bad call by the officials!
Dori is survived by her loving family; her sons, Stephen (Angela) Nicholson, Rouses Point, NY and John (Laurie) Nicholson, Utica; grandson, Benjamin J. (Justine) Bogan, Boston; son-in-law, Jerry Bogan, Amsterdam; sister-in-law, Joan White, Caroga Lake; nephews, Randy (Pamela) and David (Tammy) White; several nieces, nephews and cousins, and many special friends throughout the countryside especially her friends and neighbors at the lake.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Terry; her daughter, Nancy Nicholson Bogan in 2011; and her brother, Ken White.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend a Memorial Service for Dori, which will be held at 11:00AM on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at the Caroga Chapel, Caroga Lake, NY, with Rev Dr. R.W. Williams, officiating.
Memorial contributions in Dori’s memory may be made to the Central Oneida County Volunteer Ambulance Corp, 7489 East South St. Clinton, NY 13323. Envelopes will be available at the service.
