Donald G. Durfee, Iii

January 26, 1954 — January 19, 2024

MOHAWK - Donald G. Durfee, III, (Donnie, Durf, Dutch), passed away unexpectedly, on Friday, January 19, 2024, at his home in Mohawk, NY at the age of 69.

Donn was born January 26, 1954, to Rachel (Spaulding), in Little Falls, NY. He grew up in Fort Plain, NY and attended Fort Plain Central Schools.

Donn is survived by his wife, Mary Ann and their children, William F. Oldick Jr. and his wife, Lisa, of Fort Plain, Melissa Wilson, of Cassville, NY, Jody Douglas, of Mohawk, NY, Jeremy Durfee and his wife, Shauna, of Mohawk, NY and Jennifer Wellenstein and her husband, Clay, of Cedarville, NY. Donn is also survived by his brothers: Homer Buddles and his wife, Carol, of St. Johnsville and Gary Buddles and his wife, Linda, of Fort Plain; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and special friends.

Donn was predeceased by his mother, Rachel and Chuck Scabar; his brother, Lester Buddles; his sister, Kay Blasting; and his son, Todd Oldick.

Donn met Mary Ann in 1974. He walked up to her and told her, “I don’t know who you are but I’m gonna marry you someday”. Donn and Mary Ann married May 27, 1978, in Fort Plain, NY. Together they raised 6 children, welcomed new babies, weathered storms, put down roots and instilled values in those children and grandchildren that will be passed on for many generations to come.

Some of Durf’s most admirable traits that made him the man he was were his strong work ethic, generosity, sincerity, commitment to family, companionship, compassion and his quick wit and infectious sense of humor. He knew how to put a smile on everyone’s face and his support and guidance were like no other. When Durf would get to story telling, everyone around was on the edge of their seat. Durf was well known and was never afraid to tell you about the good old days and never feared a challenge at any age. He enjoyed a life-long hobby of riding horses for over 60 years, with his mother, brothers, cousins, nephews, nieces, children and grandchildren. Durf always knew how to light up a room and his acting skills deserved a Golden Globe. Stories were told and retold at family gatherings, parties and the weekly Friday Night Family Night, a long-standing tradition that the family instituted. The influence he had on everyone’s lives will never be forgotten and his legacy will continue to live on through many future generations.

A Celebration of Donnie’s Life will be held Friday, January 26, 2024, at the Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post 25, 43 W. Main St., Mohawk, NY, beginning at 5:00 p.m. All are welcome.

Don’s arrangements have been entrusted to Enea, Ciaccia & Applegate Funeral Directors, of the Enea & Ciaccia Family Funeral Home, Ilion, New York.
