Jordanville-Claire Doyle Smith, 87, peacefully passed away April 10 surrounded by her family. Claire was born in Little Falls, New York on September 2, 1927 and was the daughter of the late John Doyle and Annie Geraghty Doyle. Claire was predeceased by Gordon H. Smith, her husband of 49 years, in 2000. She was also predeceased by her brothers John Doyle and Frederick Doyle.
Claire was a graduate of St Mary's Academy in Little Falls and the Utica School of Commerce. She worked in the offices of the Little Falls Evening Times where she met Gordon, the love of her life. She was a homemaker and raised seven children in Jordanville. She celebrated her Irish heritage and passed the love of all things Irish to her children. Claire loved being with her family; her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was loving, caring and kind. She will be greatly missed.
Claire was Town Clerk for the Town of Warren for 14 years and active in Republican Party politics serving as a Committee Woman in the Town of Warren in Herkimer County for more than 50 years. She was a member of the Southern Herkimer County Women's Republican Club and also Secretary/Treasurer for the Highland Rural Cemetery in Jordanville for many years. She was known as Grandma Claire at Talent House, Mohawk where she also worked. Most recently, she was the hostess at the Lake House. She was a communicant of St Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church in Richfield Springs.
She is survived by her seven children, Christine (Eugene)Corrigan of Richfield Springs, Peter(Susanne)Smith of Delmar NY, Gordon Jay (Kathy)Smith of Jordanville, John(Rebecca)Smith of West Sand Lake, NY Martin(Joan)Smith of Mohawk, Moira(Lance)Yardley of Oneida and Mary Ellen (Henry) Donohue of Jordanville. She is also survived by her 13 grandchildren, Elizabeth (Elliot) Hallak, Hilary, Ryan and fiance´ Christy and Patrick Corrigan and fiance´ Sabina, Michael and Rebecca Smith, August (Robert) Teel, Sarah (Antonio) Calderon, Sean and Kelsey Smith, Nicholas and Jillian Yardley and Lindsey Shibley. Nine great grandchildren also survive; Clarissa Kunizaki, Andrew and Reese Corrigan, Bobby and Jacob Teel, Antonio, Jaden, Ethan and Violet Calderon. Claire is survived by her sisters Mary Doyle and Celine Tomaso and sister-in-law Dolores Doyle of Little Falls New York. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Claire donated her body to Upstate Medical Center for the advancement of medical research. A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday April 19 from 2-5 PM at Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 West Monroe Street, Little Falls New York 13365. A mass of Christian Burial and internment in Highland Rural Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date.
