FORT PLAIN- Mr. Chester "Chet" A. Massari Sr., 94, of State Highway 5S, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady.
He was born on April 4, 1917 in St. Johnsville, son of the late Antonio and Angelina (Augustine) Massari. On August 5, 1939, he was united in marriage with Ida T.DiGiorgio in Schenectady. Their loving union lasted 61 years until her passing on February 1, 2000.
Chet was a proud veteran of WWII, serving with the U.S. Army. He was a Tool Inspector with Remington Arms in Ilion for over 35 years before retiring in 1978. He was of the Catholic faith and a member of St. James Catholic Church in Fort Plain (Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church).
Chet loved and enjoyed his family. He was a talented woodworker who built his own house by hand including the foundation and digging his own well. He was also an avid gardener, hunter and fisherman. Chet was also a gourmet cook and a wine connoisseur. He also enjoyed traveling and in recent years spent part of the winters in Florida.
Survivors include his sons: Chester A. Massari Jr. and his wife Ann Marie of Florida and David J. Massari and his wife Jacqueline of Philadelphia, PA; his brother Ernest Massari; his sisters: Clara Luft and Agnes Richard; his 5 grandchildren: Sara and her husband John, Kathryn and her husband Scott, Christina, Jonathan and his wife Kerri, and Nathaniel and his wife Sarah; his 6 great grandchildren: Abigail, Jack, Maren, Wesley, Gabe and Luke; his in-laws John and Angie DiGiorgio, Louis DeGeorgio, Ralph and Carmela DiGiorgio, Emma DiGiorgio, Mary DeGeorgia and Dolores Fazio (all of Schenectady) , and his many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his sisters: Mary Fiacco, Lillian Giarrusso, Helen DeAngelis, and Emma Beck.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 4-7pm on Sunday, June 5, 2011 at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville. Relatives and friends are asked to meet the family at Our Lady of Hope Church in Fort Plain on Monday, June 6, 2011 where Chet's Mass Of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Dennis Murphy at 9am. Procession will follow to St. Johnsville Cemetery where he will be laid to rest alongside his wife Ida. Military honors will be offered by the U.S. Army.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in Chet's name to: PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy) or to Our lady of Hope Catholic Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
