Charles H. Sweeney Jr., 84, of Fort Herkimer, passed away Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, unexpectedly at his home. He was born June 21, 1919, in Little Falls, the son of the late Charles H. and Laura (Briggs) Sweeney. He was a graduate of Middleville High School, class of 1938. He enlisted as an Air Corps Aviation Cadet in 1941. During World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater, performing airway communications. He was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal. His marriage to Carmella Volo took place on June 20, 1947. He was at one time employed at Remington Rand. He spent the rest of his career as a dairy farmer in Mohawk. Mr. Sweeney is survived by his wife, Carmella; his son, Richard Sweeney of Mohawk; his grandchildren, Mary, Bridget, Erin and Sean Sweeney of Ilion; a daughter-in-law, Aileen Sweeney; his brother and sister-in-law, Stanley (Bud) and Eleanor Sweeney of Festus, Mo.; his in-laws, Jean and Angelo Petranto of Rochester, Mamie and Ralph Servadio of Clermont, Fla., Joseph Volo of Lakeland, Fla., and Frank Volo of Rochester. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Florence Keeler, Vera Sweeney, Beatrice Starring and a brother, Richard Sweeney. Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 16, at 9:30 a.m. from the Church of Saints Anthony and Joseph. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Friends and relatives may call at the Holleran-Enea Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington St., Herkimer, on Thursday, Jan. 15, from 6-8 p.m. Members of the Herkimer VFW Michael Pliseck Post are asked to meet at the funeral home Thursday evening at 7 for services.
