Charles H. Nemyier, of East Main Street, Ilion, New York, passed away on Monday, October 20, 2003 at Valley Health Services, Herkimer, New York. He was born on December 20, 1917 in Rome, New York; the son of the late Charles and Vivian (Palmer) Nemyier and was a graduate of Fairport High School in Fairport, New York where he had resided most of his life. Upon his move to Ilion, New York in 2000, he became a member of the AARP and the Marine Corp League Herkimer County Detachment. He was united in marriage to the former Margaret Culver (an Ilion native) on July 22, 1978 in the Ilion Methodist Church. The couple shared in a blessed union of 25 years. Charles, a World War II Veteran, first served with the U.S. Marine Corp from 1937-1941. He then re-enlisted on October 22, 1942 holding the rank of Sergeant, and was honorably discharged on January 22, 1946. During his time in the service, he received the Presidential Unit Citation and was wounded on Saipan. He served with the 2nd Marine Division in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre of Operations. Charles was employed for 25 1/2 years with General Motors in Rochester, New York where he worked as an inspector. He retired in 1980. Surviving are his beloved wife Margaret; one brother and sister-in-law, Fred Nemyier and wife Ann of Rochester; a sister, Millie Eldredge of Pittsford, NY; two nieces, Tammy Blyth and Abby Eldredge; three nephews, Bradley Eldredge, Anthony West and Michael West; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Tony West. He was preceded in death by his sister Virginia and his brother David. Friends and family may call at the Enea Family Funeral Home, Main Street, between Ilion and Frankfort, New York on Thursday, October 23, 2003 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Members of the Marine Corp League will meet at the funeral home at 7:30 pm for services. The funeral will commence on Friday, October 24, 2003 at 1:00 pm from the Enea Family Funeral Home with Rev. Thomas Trees, Rector, of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, officiating. Procession will follow to Armory Hill Cemetery, Ilion, for interment. The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the staff at Valley Health Services and St. Elizabeth's Hospotal for the excellent care and kindness given to Charles. It is the wish of the family that memorial contributions in memory of Charles be considered to the American Heart Association or to the Marine Corp League.
