Charles Thomas Hewitt, 97, a long time Dolgeville resident, passed away on Friday March 2, 2007, at the New York State Veteran?s Home in Oxford, NY. He was born July 28, 1909 in Fort Johnson, NY the son of the late Lafayette & Effie (Gates) Hewitt and was a graduate of Little Falls High School, class of 1928. His marriage to Florence Anna Van Allen took place on November 10, 1933 in Dolgeville, with Reverend C. Moulton, Officiating. The couple shared a blessed union of 71 years until the passing of Mrs. Hewitt on May 6, 2005. At the age of 19, he entered the United States Army Prep School at Schofield Barracks in Honolulu, Hawaii. Charles was a World War II Army veteran, enlisting on Feb. 24, 1944 and was honorably discharged October 21, 1945 with the rank of Private First Class. Mr. Hewitt was a postal carrier for the United States Postal Service, retiring on October 30, 1969. He was a member of the American Legion of Dolgeville and was past commander. At one time he served with the Spofford Hose Fire Department in Dolgeville and was a former member of the Dolgeville School Board. Survivors include 2 daughters, Virginia Hewitt Lash of Hamilton & Judith Ann Niles and husband Paul of Bainbridge, a sister, Helen Hewitt-Bear, of Liverpool, his grandchildren, Kimberly Bliss and husband Todd, Jeffrey Niles and wife Kristina; his great grandchildren, Ashley Bliss, Trevor Bliss, Alexandra Niles and J. Scott Niles and several nieces & nephews. Funeral services will be held on Monday March 5, 2007 at 10:00 am from the Roberts & Enea Family Funeral Home, 3 Faville Ave., Dolgeville, NY with Reverend Gertrude Ortlieb, officiating. Spring Burial will be in Dolgeville Cemetery. Calling hours will be Monday morning from 9:30 am until the time of the services. After the funeral services on Monday morning the family will be having a luncheon at Arthur?s Restaurant on Main St. in Dolgeville and would like to invite relatives and friends.
