Charles (Leo) Groulx, Sr., 72, of 720 West Walnut Street, Herkimer, New York passed away on Wednesday, October 22, 2003 at his home with his loving family by his side. He was born on August 14, 1931 in Ogdensburg, New York; the son of the late John and Mildred (Klock) Groulx. He was educated on Ogdensburg schools and attended Machine Shop School in Herkimer. Charles, a longtime resident of the Herkimer area, was a member of St. Francis de Sales Church, and became involved in several organizations: he was a member of the Herkimer Knights of Columbus Council #579 and its 4th Degree, Chosen Few of Chosen Reservoir with the Korean War, a life member of the Michael S. Pliseck VFW Post, the D.A.V., the Military Order of the Purple Heart, National American Legion, East Herkimer Fish and Game Club, along with many other groups. He was united in marriage to the former Cathryn Gilbert on February 15, 1958 in St. Agnes Church, Utica, New York. The couple had shared in a blessed union of 45 years of marriage. Charles served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, holding the rank of Corporal. He enlisted on January 13, 1949 and was honorably discharged on May 31, 1953. During his time in the service, Charles sustained injuries which resulted in permanent disabilty. He became a double amputee due to his wartime injuries and was the recipient of the Purple Heart. Surviving are his beloved wife Cathryn of Herkimer; his daughter, Cynthia Groulx of Herkimer; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Carl Lucian Groulx and wife Gail of Canada, Charles Groulx, Jr. and wife Beverly of Canada, and Christopher Groulx of Herkimer; five grandchildren, Cheyenne, Shane, Carl Groulx, Jr. and fiance Tasha Lanktree, Brandon and Jeremy Groulx; two sisters, Elizabeth (Betty) Panfil and husband Ralph of Rochester and Joyce Chevrier of Ogdensburg; three brothers, Amos Groulx, Fred Groulx and wife Carol, and Lowell Groulx all of Ogdensburg; many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and special friends. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Ronald (Tuffy) Chevrier and his sister-in-law, Pauline Groulx. Friends and relatives may call at the Enea Family Funeral Home, Main Street, between Ilion and Frankfort (894-8000) on Friday, October 24, 2003, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The following organizations will meet at the funeral home on Friday evening: Herkimer Knights of Columbus at 4:45 pm and Michael S. Pliseck VFW Post at 7:30 pm. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 25, at 10:15 am from the Enea Family Funeral Home and at 11:00 am from St. Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer, with the Reverend Mark Cunningham, Pastor, celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer, where full military rites will be accorded. The family would like to extend a very sincere thank you to the Surgical Staff and the Staff of the Oncology Department at the V.A. Hospital in Syracuse, New York for the excellent care and kindness given to Charles during these difficult times.
