Bernard W. "Bill" Smith, 76, of 80 N. William St., Little Falls, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004. He was born Jan. 20, 1928, in Little Falls, the son of the late James and Evelyn (McDonald) Smith. Bill was educated in Little Falls schools and lived all his life in the Little Falls area. His marriage to Mary Jane Slopka took place on May 11, 1962, in Little Falls. Bill was a World War II Navy veteran, enlisting on Oct. 19, 1943, and was honorably discharged on Jan. 5, 1946, with the rank of seaman second class. While serving his country, Bill was stationed on the USS Franklin and the USS Biscayne, and was awarded the following medals; Asiatic Pacific Medal - two stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, American Theater Medal and the Victory Medal. For 25 years until his retirement in 1990, Bill was employed at Salada Foods Inc. in Little Falls. At one time he worked for the former Snyder's Manufacturing in Little Falls. He was a member of the Holy Family Parish and also the Little Falls Polish Community Club and the Little Falls American Legion Post 31. Bill was an avid outdoorsman and sportsman who enjoyed big game hunting and fishing. In his leisure he enjoyed listening to country music. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Mary Jane; a son, William J. Smith of Spruce Lake; two daughters, Darhla Sterusky and husband Stephen of Little Falls and Mary Jo Smith of Nashville, Tenn.; a brother, Robert E. Smith of Melrose, Colo.; and a sister, Eileen VanderWalker of Salisbury; six grandchildren, Edward Smith, Brittany Weaver, Christopher Stever, Tamara Smith, Bradlee Pedersen and Marshall Smith; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. He was predeceased by a brother, James Smith. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 11 a.m. from the chapel of the Enea Funeral Home, 24 W. Monroe St., Little Falls. There are no calling hours.
