ILION - Alice J. (McVeigh) Smith, age 89, of Ilion, passed away on Thursday, October 24, 2013, at Mohawk Valley Health Care Center, Ilion.
She was born on March 2, 1924, in Ilion, the daughter of John F. and Vennitta (Worl) McVeigh. Alice began her teaching career in 1950 after graduating from SUNY Oswego. She taught for thirteen years in the Philippine Islands. She returned to the states and taught in the Utica school system and the Adirondack Schools in Booneville until she retired in 1984.
She leaves her brother, John McVeigh, of Rochester, NY; her niece Janet and husband, David Tillapaugh, of Richfield Springs, NY; their sons, Jayson and his wife, Shannon Tillapaugh, of Edmeston, NY, and D. Christopher Tillapaugh, of Wilmington, NC; her nephew, David W. Sullivan and his wife, Yumi, and children, Sean, Ryan, Michelle, Caitlynn and John, of Alice, TX. Alice is predeceased by her younger brother, Robert McVeigh, and younger sister, Kathleen A, Sullivan.
Memorial and graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.
