Albert “Al” D. Young, a cherished member of the Mohawk community, passed away peacefully at his home on April 4, 2026, at the age of 79, with his devoted wife Nancy by his side. Born on March 22, 1947, in Herkimer, Al was the beloved son of the late Clarence W. and Frances (Gundy) Young. He was a proud graduate of Mohawk Central School, class of 1966.
Al answered the call to serve his country with honor, dedicating five years to the United States Army from 1969 to 1974. His life was marked by hard work, unwavering dedication, and a deep love for family and community. On September 1, 1984, Al married Nancy A. Morrisette in a ceremony held at the Ilion First Presbyterian Church, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with love and mutual support.
Professionally, Al was known for his impressive skills as a machinist and machine repairman, serving Remington Arms Co. in Ilion for over 34 years. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to co-own Con-Ron Home Inspections / Enterprizes, own Ilion Laundromat, and operate Young Plowing Service. His commitment to craftsmanship and service was further reflected in his memberships with the American Society of Home Inspectors and the United Mine Workers Local.
Al’s passions extended beyond his work; he was an avid enthusiast of mechanics, woodworking, computers, and photography. He also enjoyed hunting and was notably fond of his 1979 black Cadillac, which he cherished deeply. Above all, Al’s greatest joy and pride were his family and close relationships.
He is survived by his loving wife Nancy; daughters Lori Ortega and her husband Ric of Marietta, Georgia, and Kimberly Slaughter and her husband Matthew of Phoenix, Arizona; as well as his five grandchildren: Brandon, Shannon (Janelle), Jenifer, Tyler Miazga, and Brycen Slaughter. Al also embraced Michelle Gross (and her husband Bobby) as a daughter in heart, along with their children Natalie, Madalyn, and Cole, whom he loved as his own grandchildren. Additionally, he leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and his dear friend Richard “Dick” Murdock, Jr., who was a constant presence in his life.
Albert was predeceased by his parents, his sisters Mellissa Pierce, Mable Ferguson, and Elsie Gay, and his brothers Francis Davis, Donald Young, and Joe Davis.
In respect to Al’s wishes, a Celebration of Life will take place on July 12, 2026, with the exact time and location to be announced. Friends and family are invited to commemorate his memory and share their stories through his online memorial available at www.applegateandday.com.
Arrangements for Al's service were preplanned and entrusted to his close friend and family Funeral Director, Don Applegate of Enea, Ciaccia and Applegate Funeral Directors in Ilion, New York.
Albert “Al” D. Young’s memory will forever be cherished by those who knew him — a man of dedication, warmth, and unparalleled kindness whose legacy will endure through the family and community he loved so deeply.
